16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence is an annual international campaign that seeks to raise awareness against the violation of women and children. The campaign runs from the 25th of November until the 10th of December.
For 2019, the UN Women has launched the campaign under the theme: Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape #HearMeToo. Over the years, gender based violence survivors have been able to share their stories through various hashtags such as #MeToo, #NotOneMore, #TimesUp and many others. We have also seen many hashtags being formulated over the past three months in South Africa following the murders of Uyinene Mrwetyana, Jesse Hess, Janika Mallo and Leighandre Jegels. South African women took to Twitter and tweeted #AmINext; this was and still is an outcry of women asking whether they are the next of abuse and murder simply because they are females.
